What is the IOL Bushcraft Competency Certificate training course?
The IOL Bushcraft Competency Certificate (BCC) is a prestigious award designed for individuals passionate about bushcraft and outdoor learning. It equips participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver progressive bushcraft learning experiences safely and competently in various settings. The certificate focuses on eight core bushcraft subjects, including edged tools (knives and saws), fire-making, bow drill techniques, water procurement, debris shelters and bedding, tree identification and uses, natural navigation, and cordage. These essential skills form the foundation of bushcraft education, ensuring learners are prepared to inspire and lead others in the outdoors.
At TRIBE, we are committed to helping you achieve the BCC. Our training courses, span three days and include 24 guided learning hours. Whether you are an educator, instructor, leader, or simply someone passionate about the outdoors, this course is open to all who have an interest in bushcraft, though some prior experience is recommended. We provide a supportive and immersive environment where participants can hone their skills under expert guidance, preparing them for the next stages of certification.
The path to certification also involves a consolidation period and the completion of a detailed logbook that demonstrates at least 120 hours of quality bushcraft experience. This period allows you to deepen your understanding through a blend of guided learning, self-directed practice, reflective activities, teaching, and mentoring. At TRIBE, we offer ongoing support during this phase, ensuring you are fully prepared for assessment. Weather Information
With a MO ‘yellow warning’, we will assess the TRIBE bushcraft centre to check it is safe to run. With a MO ‘amber warning’ or ‘red warning’ for the area, we will need to postpone or cancel the course for the day(s) the warning is in place for the safety of everyone involved. If cancelling we will provide a partial or full refund depending on what has been cancelled.
As weather warnings can be announced late, we can only apologise in advance for any changes but ultimately the safety of everyone who comes or works at TRIBE is our number one priority.
Overview of the course
On the day there will be easy signs to follow, guiding you into the TRIBE Bushcraft Centre. There you will meet your TRIBE instructor who will be there to guide you through the course.
This course has been designed to:

- Develop practical skills in eight core bushcraft subjects, including edged tools, fire-making, and natural navigation.

All materials and tools for the IOL Bushcraft Competency Certificate (BCC) training course are provided. If you would like to bring your own tools to use you are more than welcome to do so. These will need to be checked and approved by the TRIBE Instructor(s) for suitability before the course starts.
The following kit list is required for this course:
Outdoor footwear – we recommend walking boots (no open shoes such as sandals or crocs) Waterproof jacket Outdoor trousers (no shorts or jeans) A packed lunch Water or other cold drink
Optional / Recommended
- Gardening gloves
- A hot drink
- Insect repellent (usually summer and autumn periods only)
- Mobile phone*
*Please note: Photography and videography are permitted for personal use only. However, for safety reasons, they may be prohibited during certain activities, such as when using tools. For more information, please contact the event organizer.
Additional Information
Spending time in the woods is made even more enjoyable at TRIBE by our bright & airy on-site compost toilets, foot-operated hand washing facilities, and covered Main Camp area with seats and pads for everyone.
