Outdoors in Derbyshire

At TRIBE, we invite you and your AP students to experience an immersive and nature-based learning adventure

On a TRIBE Schools course, the young adventurers will be busy exploring, understanding, and working in harmony with the natural world. They will learn first-hand the importance and interconnectedness of ecosystems, and the many uses for plants and trees that help make it vital that they are protected. Most of all, TRIBE adventurers will find new ways of enjoying and learning in the great outdoors, increase their confidence and problem solving skills, and develop strong friendships in the absence of modern distractions.

Our creative and practical AP programmes embed mental wellbeing within them. Being out in nature and particularly our large ancient woodland has proven links to improvements in wellbeing.

At TRIBE, our instructors are here because they love what we do and believe it has a truly life-changing impact. We are used to working with children, young people and adults who do not thrive in traditional learning environments, adopting a firm yet supportive approach and letting our enthusiasm for the subject infuse into participants. With a selection of skills covering bushcraft, survival, woodland crafts, textiles, environmental studies, conservation, and more, as well as combined experience across outdoor activity centres, military, schools, and environmental education charities, our instructors bring a wealth of experience.

Take a look below for a selection of the curriculum links for our standard bushcraft activities.

Do your students have particular interests that we can nurture? Our standard bushcraft programmes include all of the usual bushcraft essentials: fire, shelter, water, etc. However, we are also able to offer alternative focuses – survival skills; creativity/ art & design; conservation & woodland management; ecology and environmental monitoring.

Get in touch with the AP programme lead, Alison Ball, to discuss.

Our bushcraft centre is based in the middle of a 90 acre ancient woodland; groups can feel a sense of humbleness and peace away from the hustle & bustle of towns, cities and even roads. The 15 minute walk to and from camp combined with the homely feel of camp itself reinforces that this is somewhere completely different with a different way of being. Instead of cars, alarms and phones, it’s rustling branches, flowing streams, and wild birdsong.

We minimise the use of modern technology on our sessions and have a ‘no phones’ rule for participants. Removing the distractions of the digital world allows us all to connect with those around us, the natural world and ourselves.

On our sessions participants use tools, make responsible fires, and make group and individual decisions that impact the space and people around us. Students are given freedom to explore, make mistakes, and express themselves, all within limits, promoting safety and kindness for ourselves, others, and the natural environment.

For those students with higher energy levels, we have the space and ability to create a more physically demanding programme incorporating larger projects and a greater area of the woodland. Similarly our instructors are able to adapt their sessions to meet the varying energy and focus needs of the group.

Testimonials

We contacted TRIBE to see if they could offer support to a pupil at our school who was struggling with full-time education within a mainstream setting. The meeting that followed clearly set out the activities that they could offer and outlined the ethos and the ‘rules’ of TRIBE based around respect for others, themselves and the environment.
Our pupil has been attending twice a week and absolutely loves it! The woodland setting is beautiful and all safeguarding and safety aspects have been clearly thought out and planned for. A visit to the site showed children of mixed ages working together and learning a range of new skills. Each day is different, with a wide range of outdoor activities and learning opportunities.
After attending TRIBE for a few weeks we have already noticed a difference in our pupils behaviour – they are more engaged, can listen better to instructions and able to attend class more often. They seem happier and calmer and therefore more able to learn and make progress in their learning.
I have been impressed with TRIBE in many ways – their ethos, the effective communication between parent, home and school and their passion in supporting children to learn in an outdoor setting has been impressive. I would recommend other schools to find out about all they can offer and book a meeting and visit.”

CURRICULUM LINKS

The TRIBE Schools Courses are designed to compliment school-based learning in many areas, including:

History

Problem-solving and crafting using simple hand tools. The tools and techniques are often adaptations of those used in Stone Age and Iron Age settlements.

Physical Education

Our TRIBE courses class as outdoor and adventurous activity, with pupils experiencing new activities that have the added benefit of turning into wholesome, affordable, and sustainable hobbies for them going forward.

Science

A key part of bushcraft is understanding the natural environment and working in harmony with nature. Pupils will learn to identify and categorise different plants, determining their uses based on their physical characteristics. During fire lighting, pupils learn about the fire triangle and friction.

Art & Design

Bushcraft offers many ways to be expressive, and at TRIBE there are plenty of opportunities for creativity. On our courses, pupils will be introduced to natural materials that can be used to add colour and texture to their art. They will be able to take inspiration from the patterns that occur in nature.

Technology

Bushcraft and Problem Solving / Design go hand-inhand. Pupils will use different tools to make functional items, selecting natural materials and applying technical knowledge to create strong items and structures, Pupils will have the opportunity to produce simple dishes using different outdoor campfire-cooking techniques
