Ever since we started TRIBE, it has been with the aim of improving the natural environment and the opportunities for children & adults. Many have suggested that we set up as a charity, however that is too restrictive for our ambitions.
Instead, we have registered as a Social Enterprise with Social Enterprise UK.
Social enterprises are strange things in that there is no legal definition of them but there are guidelines outlined by governing bodies.
So what does this all mean? Well, because we have always meet the criteria of a Social Enterprise, nothing will change in practice. As an accrediting organisation and global leader of all things SE, SEUK are pretty clear on their expectations:
Our expectations of social enterprises are as follows:
Your business has a clear social or environmental mission that is set out in its governing documents.
You are an independent business and earn more than half of your income through trading (or are working towards this)
You are controlled or owned in the interests of your social mission
You reinvest or give away at least half your profits or surpluses towards your social purpose
You are transparent about how you operate and the impact that you have
2021 Update: With everything being set back quite a lot due to this current pandemic, we’re not progressing quite as much and quickly as we had hoped, however we remain committed to our environmental and social goals, reconnecting people with nature and supporting sustainable and respectful exploration and enjoyment of the natural world.
